Some Birankai North America dojos incorporate zazen (meditation) and other practices of Zen Buddhism in their study of Aikido. At its core Zen is a psycho-physical discipline, the characteristic of which "is to bring about confrontation with one's original face without the impediment of intellectual and ideological speculation." (Chiba, T.K. "Zen and Aikido.") As such, it can powerfully complement Aikido and provide spiritual, moral and intellectual rationales for Aikido training. Birankai therefore supports its members who feel called to undertake the combined practice of Zen and Aikido demonstrated by our Founder, T.K. Chiba Shihan. A number of Birankai dojo offer regular zazen practice and may also arrange sesshin (intensive meditation retreats) under the guidance of Zen teachers. Two Zen temples in particular currently support Birankai members in their practice: Dai Bai Zan Cho Bo Zen Ji and Korinji. Participation in Zen practice is voluntary at all Birankai dojo and events. Here is a downloadable handout explaining in more detail the historical and practical rationales behind the combined practice of Aikido and Zen: |
